Keep in Mind

Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Credit cards are widely accepted. There are many ATMs that will convert your U.S. dollars to Moroccan Dirhams when you withdraw money. Here’s the current exchange rate.

Electrical Current: Marrakech uses 220-volt, 50-cycle A.C. with Type C and Type E plugs. You’ll want to bring a voltage converter and plug adapter. Check your electrical device manuals to see if your phone, laptop and camera are dual voltage.

Language: Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) are the official languages of Morocco, but English and French are also widely spoken.

Marrakech was founded in 1062 by the Almoravid dynasty, making the city over 960 years old!

Jemaa el Fna is a famous square and one of the busiest markets in Africa, filled with street food vendors, snake charmers, storytellers and musicians.

The city's gardens are home to a multitude of native plants, alongside other species brought over the ages. These include huge bamboos, yuccas, papyrus, palm trees, banana trees, cypress, philodendrons, rose bushes, bougainvilleas, pines and various types of cactus plants.

The remarkable terracotta color of its walls and buildings earned Marrakech its nickname, the “Red City.” The city's red clay, sand and water are locally sourced, giving its traditional construction methods their unique color.

Within its impressive ramparts, Marrakech boasts about eleven old gates, many of which date back to the 12th century. These imposing gates, often referred to as “Bab” in Arabic, symbolize the city’s magical realm and testify to its enduring past.

Marrakech is divided into two parts: the old town, known as the Medina, and the new town, Gueliz, creating a perfect balance between the traditional and modern aspects of the city.
